Communications Specialist: Application for Employment

Police Officer: Application for Employment Salary: $13.82/hr to $22.14/hr. This is the initial non-probationary level for all sworn officers after they have completed the recruit school, Field Training Officer (FTO) program and 12 month probationary period. Position requires monitoring and enforcement of the criminal and traffic laws. Work requires responsibility to react in a thorough and professional manner and an ability to deal with the public and observe suspicious activity. Works under direct supervision of the Lieutenant or Captain. Within the rank of Police Officer there are various assignments to a variety of functions. However, they are all Police Officers and subject to transfer based on the needs of service. These special assignments may include: Traffic, Records, Training, Narcotics, Field Training Officer, and D.A.R.E. Officer. See bottom of description for special duties assigned to each. However, the other minimum qualifications and working conditions are the same as Police Officer.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Patrols all assigned areas of the City checking buildings, bars/private clubs, and residences for suspicious activity to deter crime and to protect lives and property of the citizens.

2. Enforces state and federal laws and City ordinances and City and State traffic laws.

3. Investigates crime scene; talks to or interviews witnesses or victims; searches for, collects and preserves evidence; participates in line-ups; makes oral or written reports such as criminal complaint forms or narrative reports; testifies in court.

4. Makes arrests on criminal and traffic related offenses at the scene. Executes search warrant and arrest after obtaining sufficient evidence to arrest.

5. Assists stranded motorists, provides assistance to those who need aid, comfort or who are in distress.

6. Determines if a person is in danger to self or others and their ability to provide for their life’s daily needs, evaluates their mental stability, performing and Emergency Order of Detention if needed.

7. Investigates traffic accidents. Assists with jail responsibilities: booking and fingerprinting; may back-up dispatch for meal relief, may back-up animal control officers. May assist Detective in diverse tasks involving the recognition, collection, and analysis of evidence and information.

8. Speaks before citizens and citizen's groups; participates in various in service training; communicates with other law enforcement personnel in various agencies and with the City/District Attorney's office.

9. Must demonstrate proficiency with firearms and with physical defense techniques to defend self and others.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

To be eligible for Recruit Police Officer: Must be 21 years old. Although Police Officer is an entry level position, the incumbent must complete 12 months of probation and complete both written and practical knowledge and field training under the direct supervision of a field training officer. Must pass local comprehension/aptitude tests, practical exams, MMPI-2/CPI or related psychological performance tests; must have passed a comprehensive background investigation; must have completed other interviews, polygraph, drug test or other exams. Must pass the State Police pension board exam. Must be able to obtain CLEET certification and pass the firearms qualifications and physical defense exams, etc. Must be a resident of the State of Oklahoma and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor of moral turpitude or have pending criminal actions. Must not be a current user of controlled substances. Must demonstrate both through background investigation, interviews, and other tests that he/she is suited for the job of Police Officer. Must be able to touch type 20 words per minute.
